Abstract

A pre-experimental study was conducted to “Assess the Effectiveness of Music Therapy on Anxiety among Patients Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization in GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore”. Objectives were to assess the levels of anxiety and vital parameters, compare the levels of anxiety and the effect of music therapy, compare the vital parameters and the effect of music therapy and associate the levels of anxiety with demographic variables. Quasi pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design was adopted for the study. Sixty samples who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were chosen by convenient sampling technique. Conceptual framework was based on modified Roy’s adaptation model. Structured interview questionnaire was used to assess the demographic data. Modified Hamilton Anxiety Rating scale was used to assess the levels of anxiety and its associated signs and symptoms. Vital parameters were also assessed. Pretest was conducted upon admission at cath lab. Music therapy was provided to the patient for 30 minutes followed by the pretest. Posttest was conducted two hours after the intervention. Outcomes were evaluated by descriptive and inferential statistics. The mean difference of levels of anxiety was 17.39, with combined SD of 5.81 and ‘t’ value of 22.30. Paired ‘t’ test showed that there was a significant difference in pretest and posttest level of anxiety at 0.05 level. The calculated blood pressure ‘t’ value (7.35) was higher than the table value (1.96). The calculated heart rate ‘t’ value (9.09) was higher than the table value (1.96). Thus, the study concluded music therapy as an eminent, cost effective and harmless intervention for reducing anxiety and vital parameters.
