Rheumatic Heart Disease - stuck in Prosthetic Valve

Sembian. N

Abstract

Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) endure to be a main health danger in most emerging countries as well as periodically in progressive economies. The healing process of rheumatic carditis results in varying degrees of fibrosis and valve damage Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a nonspecific evidence for an active GAS infection. It is elevated in acute RF but can be normal if the patient has congestive failure and can be high in the presence of anemia. GAS has remained sensitive to penicillin and should have been eradicated. Availability of a vaccine, which could prevent streptococcal infection, is essential for primary prevention of RF. Prevalence of RF/RHD has been attributed to overcrowding and unhygienic living related to low socio-economic status.
