Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge Regarding Warning Signs of Myocardial Infarction among Patients with Hypertension

Abstract


Hypertension exerts a substantial public health burden on cardiovascular health status and healthcare systems in India. Cardiovascular diseases caused 2.3 million deaths in India in the year 1990 and this is projected to double by the year 2020. Hypertension is responsible for 57% of all stroke deaths and 24% of all coronary heart disease deaths in India. A pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test research design was adopted for the study and 30 patients with hypertension were selected using simple random sampling technique. Semi-structured questionnaire regarding warning signs of myocardial infarction (MI) was used to assess the level of knowledge among patients with hypertension and structured teaching programme on warning signs of myocardial infarction was given to the patients for about 20–30 minutes which was followed by the post-test. The study findings showed that the pre-test mean score was 14.43 with standard deviation of 3.86 and post-test mean score was 26.26 with standard deviation of 1.58. The paired `t` value was 16.438 which revealed that there was a highly statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge at p<0.001.
