Knowledge Regarding Prevention of Occupational Health Hazards Among Coir Workers

Abstract


The present study was aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge regarding prevention of health hazards among 30 coir industry workers in the selected coir industry in the Alappuzha district by convenience sampling technique. The objectives of the present study were to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of occupational health hazards among coir workers using structured knowledge questionnaire and to find out the association between knowledge regarding prevention of occupational health hazards and selected demographic variables. The study is built on the health belief model. The model provides a way of understanding and predicting how the client behaves in relation to his/her health and how he/she will comply with healthcare therapies. The findings show that 63.3% of coir workers have moderate knowledge, 26.7% have poor knowledge, only 10% have good knowledge, and there is no one in the category of excellent knowledge regarding prevention of occupational health hazards in coir industry. There is no significant association between the knowledge level and the selected variables such as age (  = 4.4), gender (  = 2.9), religion(  = 1.0), education (  =21.4), marital status (  = 5.7), family income (  = 5.00), years of experience in coir industry (  = 6.1), and working unit in the coir industry (  = 4.00) at 0.05 level of significance.
