Brain Death and Care of Organ Donor

Veeralakshmi A., Ramesh Kumari Singh

Abstract

Organ donation from brain dead deceased has specific implications for saving several lives. Awareness regarding maintenance of organ after brain death has increased in the field of transplant. Apnea test is a clinical confirmative test for the diagnosis of brain death. When the apnea test cannot be completed, the ancillary test can be considered. In order to improve graft quality for donation, adequate care for the donor with hemodynamic indices and lung protective strategies are mandatory. India is still ranked low compared to the rest of the world in deceased donation.
