Abstract

Introduction: Home-related accidents are the major cause of morbidity and mortality among children between the age group of 1 and 6 years. Incidence of home accidents in children continues at high levels despite injury prevention education programmes for parents. The main accidents are falls, cuts/wounds, burns/scalds, choking/foreign body aspiration, drowning and poisoning. They happen due to lack of parents’ awareness and supervision. Aim of the Study: The present study is aimed to assess the knowledge and practices of parents regarding prevention and management of home accidents in children of the selected rural area of Faridkot district, Punjab. Materials and Methods: Through convenience sampling, 200 parents were selected and a structured interview schedule was used for the collection of data. Results: The majority of parents, i.e. 59%, had average, 23.5% had poor, and 17.5% had good knowledge regarding home accidents. 40% parents had adequate and 60% parents had inadequate practices regarding home accidents. Most of the parents, i.e. 86%, had correct knowledge about common objects for foreign body aspirations such as beads, nuts and buttons, and only 21% of subjects reported that, if the child consumed kerosene, then we should not induce vomiting immediately. 25% subjects never supervised the child while playing and only 10% subjects always seek medical help in case of foreign body aspiration. The study revealed that a statistically significant relationship was found between knowledge and age of child, education, occupation of parents and monthly family income and between practices and age of parent, education, occupation of parents, and monthly family income at p < 0.05. Conclusion: The findings of the study revealed that parents had average knowledge and inadequate practices regarding prevention and management of home accidents. Thus, the information booklet was developed that would be helpful to enhance awareness and skills in parents regarding home accidents.
