Effectiveness of Educational Programme About Knowledge of Parents Regarding Ill Effects of Watching Television Among Under-Five Children in Selected Area

Abstract


Background: Watching television (TV) is a main hobby in people’s lives and has notable impacts on all age groups, particularly children and adolescents. Nowadays, children watch TV more; therefore, they are more inactive compared to their peers. Only a few children go out for playing after school, while 80% of them are interested in watching TV at home. Watching TV for more than 2 hours per day is associated with obesity, social isolation, and aggression and attention problems in children. The parents should play an important role in minimizing the effects of watching TV; they have to take few steps that they should limit the amount of time children spend in watching TV to no more than 1–2 hours. Objectives: (1) To assess the level of knowledge of parents regarding ill effects of watching TV among under-five children before educational programme. (2) To evaluate the effectiveness of educational programme about knowledge of parents regarding ill effects of watching TV among under-five children after educational programme. (3) To associate the level of knowledge score with selected demographic variables. Material and Method: The study was conducted in a selected community area. Research approach used for this study was pre-experimental approach. Sixty parents of under-five children (age between 25 and 30 years) from a selected community area for the study. Structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect the data. Result: The post-test score (48.33%) parents have good knowledge (51.67%) have excellent knowledge. Conclusion: The major findings revealed that educational programme enhanced the knowledge of parents regarding ill effects of watching TV among under-five children. The overall mean percentage is the post-test knowledge scores of the parents.
