Abstract

This study is to assess the quality of life among patients with chronic renal disease before and after meditation in both experimental and control groups; to evaluate the effectiveness of meditation on quality of life among patients with chronic renal disease; and to associate the pretest and posttest levels of quality of life among patients with chronic renal disease and their selected demographic variables in experimental group. The conceptual framework was developed based on the Ernestin Wiedenback’s helping art of clinical nursing theory (1964). Design: Quasi-experimental design (pretest–posttest design) and consecutive sampling technique were used. Setting of the study: Nephrology ward, Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. Subjects: There were 60 subjects included in the study. Intervention: Preksha meditation twice a day for five consecutive days. Main outcome measure: Pretest and posttest scores of quality of life among chronic renal disease were assessed by using standardized tool WHOQOLSF36 BREF (WHO Quality of Life SF36 tool) before and after intervention with Preksha meditation. Findings: The study showed that the mean of the pretest was 11.26 and mean of the posttest was 28. The standard deviation of the pretest was 2.4 and in the posttest, it was 7.4. The mean difference is 16.74. The paired t-test calculated value was greater than the tabulated value and 5% level of significance (P<0.05). Thus the inferential statistical method proved that the difference in the mean scores and the t-value showed a significant change in the quality-of-life level among chronic renal disease. Conclusion: Preksha meditation was effective in increasing the quality of life among chronic renal disease clients.
