Methods and Materials: The non-experimental (one group – pre- and posttest) design was adopted for the study. Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were admitted in in-patient and out-patient department in ESIC Hospital, Ayanavaram at Chennai was taken as samples. Convenient sampling technique was used to select the 60 samples. A personal demographic and clinical demographic variable was collected by using structured interview schedule and the knowledge was assessed using self structured module. The data obtained were analyzed and interpreted in terms of the objectives and hypothesis of the study by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The level of significance was set at 0.05 and 0.001 levels. Results: The major findings of the study in the data analysis revealed that there was significant difference between pre- and posttest level of knowledge on self management of type 2 diabetes mellitus among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. There was a marked increase in the mean value from 17.73 in pretest to 32.20 in posttest and the standard deviation is decreased from 6.560 in pretest to 2.265 in posttest with the ‘t’ value 13.036 at p<0.001 level which showed that, there was a highly significant difference between the pre- and posttest level of knowledge regarding self management of type 2 diabetes mellitus among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Hence it indicates. Conclusion: The study revealed that there was an increase in level of knowledge from pre- to posttest level of knowledge on self management of type 2 diabetes mellitus among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using the structured teaching program regarding self management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
