Prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Among School age Children

Abstract


Attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is commonly diagnosed during the school-age period. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of ADHD among school-age children in selected wards of Mararikulam Grama Panchayat. The objectives of the present study were to assess the prevalence of ADHD among school-age children and to find the association between selected demographic variables. The study is based on health promotion model. Quantitative descriptive approach was adopted for the study. The sample comprised 30 school-age children within the age group of 6–8 years of age residing in 11th and 12thwards of Mararikulam Grama Panchayat. They were selected by convenience sampling technique. Data were collected by giving modified swan rating scale and demographic questionnaire to the mothers of school-age children. The results show that 3.3% of the subjects having inattentive type of ADHD, 6.6% of the subjects having combined type of ADHD, no children were identified with hyperactive type of ADHD and 90.1% of the subjects not having any type of ADHD. There is a significant association between prevalence of ADHD and number of siblings (χ2 13.9, p = 0.007) at 0.05 level of significance
