A Descriptive Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Swine Flu and Its Preventive Measures among Staff Nurses in Selected Hospital, Mohali, Punjab

Abstract


Background: Today, the world is facing one of the dreadful diseases, which is swine flu. Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by influenza virus. From the acute hospital perspective, the major challenges include prevention of nosocomial spread to other patients and staff in healthcare facilities. It is important to protect healthcare staff so that they avoid can infection and can continue to perform their jobs. Aims: The primary aim of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding swine flu and its preventive measures among the staff nurses. Method: The research design was descriptive, which is a non-experimental research design. The tool was validated by experts and found to be valid and reliable for the study. The main study was conducted in Ivy hospital, Mohali, Punjab. Convenience sampling method was used for the sample selection in the study. 100 staff nurses were selected for this study. The data were collected by self-administered structured knowledge questionnaire. The pamphlets were imparted to educate the staff nurses regarding swine flu and its preventive measures. Conclusion: The findings of pretest revealed that 57% staff nurses had low level of knowledge, 42% staff nurses had average level of knowledge and 1% staff nurses had high level of knowledge.
