Evidence of Birthing Positions in the Second Stage of Labor

Saima habeeb, Manju Chhugani, Munira Bashir

Abstract

The second stage of labor is described as starting with full cervical dilatation (10 cm) and ending
with fetal expulsion. Nulliparous women had a median length of 50 minutes, whereas
multiparous women have a median duration of 20 minutes. For the mother and fetus, as well as
the care providers, the second stage of labor is frequently the most difficult aspect of the birthing
process. The risk of maternal and fetal problems rises as the second stage of labor lasts longer.
For example, postpartum haemorrhage, surgical delivery, third- and fourth-degree laceration,
poor Apgar score, and infant asphyxia-related problems have all been linked to a protracted
second stage of labor or pushing. Maternal and newborn problems that occurred during this time
might be fatal. As a result, in order to organise safe vaginal births, the second stage of labor must
be managed.
