Abstract

A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge about hydrotherapy among staff nurses in selected hospitals at Mysore. The objectives of the study were:
1. To assess the pretest knowledge of staff nurses regarding hydrotherapy.
2. To administer the structured teaching programme regarding hydrotherapy among staff nurses.
3. To assess the post test knowledge of staff nurses regarding hydrotherapy.
4. To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding hydrotherapy.
5. To find the association between the pretest knowledge score with selected demographic variables such as age, gender, year of experience, qualification, income per month and previous knowledge regarding hydrotherapy. Methods: A pre-experimental study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of structured teaching programme on knowledge about hydrotherapy among staff nurses. Convenient sampling technique was used for a sample of 60 staff nurses in Gopala Gowda Shanthaveri Memorial Hospital Trust. The conceptual framework used for the study was based on open system theory. Result: It was revealed that in pretest 21 (35%) subjects had poor knowledge, 20(33.33%) had average and 19(31.66%) had good knowledge regarding hydrotherapy. In post test it was revealed that 15(25%) participants had average knowledge, 27(45%) participants had good and 18(30%) respondents had very good knowledge regarding hydrotherapy. Study proved that mean post test knowledge score (19.16) was greater than the mean pretest score (12.88). The mean difference between difference pretest knowledge score and post test knowledge score was (6.27). Paired t test knowledge score is Paired’ t =15.79 *p<0.05 is significant at 0.05% level. Conclusion: The findings of the study supported that effectiveness of structured teaching programme in increasing the knowledge regarding hydrotherapy among staff nurses. A nurse is key person of a health team, who play major role in the health promotion and maintenance. Nurses working in hospital and community must be competent enough practicing hydrotherapy. The investigator felt a need to teach the staff nurses regarding hydrotherapy because it is more effective but not frequently used in hospital.
