Abstract

Background: Pressure ulcer presents a major health challenge worldwide. The presence of pressure ulcer creates a number of significant difficulties physically, psychologically, and clinically to patients, care givers and their families. Pressure ulcer represents a major burden of sickness and reduces quality of life for patients, their care givers and families. Pressure ulcers are easier to prevent than to treat. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a structured educational program on knowledge of pressure ulcer management in care givers of ambulatory patients by performing pre-intervention and post-intervention on day 7th. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the effect of planned health education on the knowledge of decubitus care among care givers of non-ambulatory patients in selected SKIMS areas of hospitals in the city of Srinagar. A sample of 50 caregivers of a client with a disability was selected using a random sampling technique. A pre-test was conducted immediately after the pre-test, a planned health education was provided to the caregivers of outpatient clients, and a post-test was conducted using the same questionnaire one week after the pre-test. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyses the data. The sampled subjects had poor knowledge of pressure sore care in the pre-test i.e. 42%, and in the post-test the subjects had an improved knowledge regarding care of pressure sores. The method used was quantitative research. Knowledge questionnaire was used as tool; It had two sections: Section A: Socio demographic profile and Section B: knowledge questionnaire had 30 items. This study was conducted at selected SKIMS hospital Srinagar Kashmir. Results: Research results show that the value of knowledge has increased significantly after exposure to a structured educational program for pressure ulcer. There was a statistically significant relationship between knowledge and the demographic variables education and family income that they chose. Conclusion: This study concluded that the mean difference in knowledge before and after the test was 18.720. STP has been statistically proven to increase knowledge of pressure ulcer management among caregivers of non-walkable patients
