Monica Job, Susan Kumar

Abstract

Background: As profession become more interdependent, quality assurance programme will help to improve the quality of nursing care. Since there is no much research conducted in this area the investigator wishes to conduct a study on the effectiveness of enhancement programme for staff nurses on selected quality indicators in critical care units. Objectives: (1) To compare the adverse events before and after the enhancement programme. (2) To compare the family satisfaction before and after the enhancement programme. Method: The study used a one-group pre-test/post-test design. The 40 patients' family members were chosen using simple random selection. Family satisfaction was assessed using (FS-ICU) questionnaire and record review was done to assess the incidence of adverse events for the one month preceding the enhancement programme an organised teaching programme was conducted by the investigator. Satisfaction and the occurrence of adverse events were measured after one month of intervention. Results: There is a change in the incidence of adverse events before and after the enhancement programme. The mean satisfaction score before the intervention was 70.20±13.10 and after the intervention was 74.75±15.32 which is not statistically significant at p<0.05 level. Interpretation and conclusion: The enhancement programme made a contribution among the staff nurses in increasing the practice of care towards the patients and their family members in the intensive care units. The scores indicated that the enhancement programme was an effective method of improving the nursing practice and thereby promoting the quality of care among nurses.
