Khagi Maya Pun

Abstract

Suicide is considered a severe public health problem around the world; suicide-preventive training has shown to influence on knowledge and attitudes. Quasi-experimental (pre-test and post-test) design was used to assess an effectiveness of structured teaching program and compare the level of knowledge and attitude, between experimental and control groups before and after a structured teaching program. Hundred nurses were selected purposively, and then divided into experimental and control groups using random allocation technique. The pre-test on prevention of suicide was conducted on the first day using structured self-administered knowledge and attitude questionnaire, and the post-test was done after seven days of completion of the teaching program for an experimental group, and no education was given for control group. Result: There is no significant differences in the pre-test mean score of knowledge and attitude between experimental and control groups. Whereas, in the post-test, after structured teaching program, there is a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (P< 0.00). The study results conclude that structured teaching program on suicide prevention has a significant effect on gaining knowledge and change in attitude of nursing personnel. Therefore, to increase the knowledge and change in attitude of nurses, regular formal in-service education programs are needed.
