Abstract

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a life-threatening neurologic emergency related to the use of neuroleptic agents. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of psychoeducation regarding NMS on psychiatric nurses' knowledge. The quasi-experimental design was used. The study was conducted at The Shebin El Kom Mental Health Hospital at Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. A purposive sample of 50 psychiatric nurses from the above-mentioned setting was enrolled. A constructive interview questionnaire was used, which consisted of two parts, first part was to assess sociodemographic data, second part was to assess the nurse‘s knowledge related NMS and its nursing intervention. The study illustrated that there was a statistically significant improvement in nurse's knowledge regarding NMS. Conclusion: the psychoeducation intervention was effective in improvement of the nurses’ knowledge regarding NMS and its intervention. Recommendation: Different psychiatric nursing programs are required to cover the psychiatric nurses’ educational needs. This nursing intervention provides the psychiatric nurses with accurate information to achieve optimal knowledge, practice and promote patient safety.
