Abstract

A mental health condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is triggered by experiencing a terrifying event. The people who experienced or witnessed the traumatic events may develop some physical or mental health complications because of the impact of the event. The objectives of the study were to determine the PTSD symptoms among general population in flood-affected areas of Ernakulam District, and to find the association between PTSD symptoms among general population with selected demographic variables. The following tools were used in this study: Tool 1: socio-demographic proforma, Tool 2: PTSD Symptom Scale (PSS-1). A pilot study was conducted among general population in flood-affected areas and the study was found to be feasible and reliable. Permission from the authorities was obtained and data collection was done among 113 subjects from Ramamangalam Grama Panchayath, Ernakulam district. The data analysis was done using descriptive (frequency and percentage) and inferential statistics (chi-square). The result revealed that there is a significant association between PTSD symptoms and selected socio-demographic variables.
