A study to assess the screen time and quality of sleep among nursing students in a selected nursing college, wayanad.

Abstract


Aim: In this study, we examined the screen time and sleep quality of B.Sc. nursing students at a specific nursing college in Wayanad. The study's objectives included assessing the students' screen time, evaluating their sleep quality, exploring potential links between screen time and sleep quality, and determining any correlations between the two factors among nursing students. Materials and methods: The research methodology employed in this study is descriptive in nature. A sample of 60 students from Dr. Moopen's Nursing College was chosen using a convenient sampling method. Study also adopted structured sleep quality assessment scale PSQI to assess the screen time and quality of sleep. Categorical variables' relationships were assessed through the utilization of a chi-square test.The relation between continuous variables were assessed using Karl Pearson correlation. The systematically collected data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics Result: Out of the 60 sample 1 had no sleep difficulty with the screen time of >2.51 hours of the total 60 subjects 44 had mild sleep difficulty of which 3(68%) had a screen time <30 mins, 20 (45.5%) had a screen time between 31 mins to 1.5 hours, 16 (36.4%) had a screen time of 1.51 to 2.5 hours and 5 (11.4%) had a screen time of >2.51 hours. Out of the 60 subjects 14 had moderate sleep difficulty of which 5 (35.5%) had a screen time <30 mins, 6 (42.9%) had a screen time between 31 mins to 1.5 hours and 3 (21.4%) had a screen time 1.51 hours to 2.5 hours. Out of 60 samples 1 had severe sleep difficulty with a screen time of 37 mins to 1.5 hoursThe analysis of association between PSQI score and screen time shows statistically significant association with p-value 0.024.Pearson’s co-relation revealed that total sleep time was associated with decreased sleep quality(R= 0.356, P<0.001).Discussion: The analysis of the relationship between the PSQI score and screen time reveals a statistically significant association, as indicated by a p-value of 0.024.On the analysis of association the present study concludes that, the majority of the students have mild sleep difficulty after their screen time during night.
