A Study to Assess the Knowledge and Attitude towards the Effects of Alcohol among Students in A Selected Pre-university Colleges in Kollegal Taluk, with A View to Develop an Information Booklet on Prevention of Alcoholism

Abstract


The study aimed at assessing the knowledge and attitude of pre-university students regarding Effects of
Alcohol and to associate them with selected demographic variables and to develop an information
booklet on Prevention of Alcoholism. Alcohol use is widespread among adolescents and continuous
apprehension over youth drinking has been creating lots of physical, psychological problems and also
imposes negative cultural values on the society Therefore, the investigator felt that there is a compelling
need to assess the knowledge and attitude of adolescent students regarding ill effects of alcohol.
Descriptive survey approach was adopted. The sample for the present study includes 50 pre-university
students. Simple random sampling technique was employed for the sample selection. A tool consisting
of structured knowledge and attitude questionnaire, based on demographic data, 33 items on knowledge
and 20 on attitude. The data were collected and analyzed. Based on the findings, the information booklet
was developed. Overall findings showed that, respondents knowledge about effect of alcohol is
inadequate (33.2%), although the respondents overall attitude towards effect of alcohol is found to be
favorable (77.7%). So the enhancement in knowledge aspect is required. There exist significant
association between knowledge and type of family. There exists significant association between attitude
and type of family and also between attitude and academic marks. Students may improve their
knowledge and attitude by reading information booklet regarding on Prevention of Alcoholism.
