Abstract

Background: Handling of chemotherapeutic drugs and their administration through
intravenous route is a common procedure in clinical setting of any hospital and student nurses
while working in their clinical areas are involved in handling and administration of
chemotherapeutic drugs to the patients through intravenous route. Handling of
chemotherapeutic drugs and their administration to patient through intravenous route is a
common procedure. Various serious complications may arise due to inadequate knowledge of
nursing students regarding safe handling and administration of chemotherapeutic drugs.
Therefore this study was conducted to find out knowledge of B.Sc. nursing 3rd year students
regarding safe handling of chemotherapeutic drugs in a selected nursing college of Patiala,
Punjab. Methods: Pre-experimental design was adopted, with 40 B.Sc. nursing 3rd year
students as study subjects, taken to assess the knowledge regarding safe handling of
chemotherapeutic drugs. A convenient sampling technique was used to collect data from the
study subjects. Data was collected by using self structured questionnaire and a structured
teaching program from the students. After the pre-test, the students were administered with a
structured teaching programme to enhance their knowledge regarding safe handling of
chemotherapeutic drugs and then post-test was done. The data was analyzed by using
descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The analysis showed that the mean percentage of
post-test scores of B.Sc. Nursing 3rd year students after structured teaching program was more
than pre-test knowledge and it varied from 8 to 25. The mean pre-test knowledge score was
17.5. The post-test knowledge varied from 19 to 34 and the mean post-test knowledge score
was 27.2. Conclusion: Hence, it was conducted that the structured teaching programme is an
effective teaching strategy whereby the B.Sc. nursing students could be helped to increase their
knowledge regarding safety measures during handling of chemotherapeutic drugs.
