Effectiveness of Information Booklet on Knowledge on Prevention of Mental Illness and Related Stigma among the Attendants of Admitted Patient to Psychiatric Department of MKCG MCH Berhampur

Abstract


Background: Stigma discrimination and neglect prevent care of people with mental disorders. 1 in 5 people experience mental illness during their life time. It is very much essential for the relatives of mentally ill persons are expected to know about prevention of mental illness and its related stigma. Objectives: Objectives of the study were to assess the effectiveness of information booklet on knowledge on prevention of mental illness and related stigma among the attendants of admitted patients to psychiatric department of MKCG MCH Berhampur. Methods: A one group pre-test–post-test with pre-experimental design was conducted to assess the effectiveness of information booklet regarding prevention of mental illness and its related stigma among 50 attendants of admitted patients to psychiatric department of MKCG MCH Berhampur. Data were collected by purposive sampling technique through structured questionnaire schedule. Results: Findings reveal that the overall mean pre-test knowledge score was 13.94±3.09 which is 40.11% of the total score revealing poor knowledge; whereas the mean post-test score was 26.24±3.76 which is 77.17%, revealing good knowledge and the effectiveness was 37.06%. Highly significant (p<0.05) difference was found between pre and post-test knowledge score whereas no significant (p<0.01) association was found between pre and post-test knowledge score when compared to demographic variables.
