Abstract

Background: Substance use disorders represent a major public health challenge worldwide. Risk factors for developing substance abuse are physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, exposure to trauma, bullying, gang affiliation, family members or peers who use or misuse substances, easy access to these substances, comorbid psychiatric illness, lack of knowledge about drugs and unhealthy coping skills towards life events. Aim: This study is aimed to measure the effect of educational intervention on knowledge and attitude related to substance abuse among inmates in de-addiction centers of selected districts, Rajasthan. Methods: Pre- experimental one group pre-test post-test research design was used to assess the impact of educational intervention among conveniently selected 300 inmates of de-addiction centers by using a sociodemographic sheet, knowledge questionnaire, and attitude scale. One hour of educational intervention was given to all the patients. Results: Pre-test mean score of substance users for knowledge and attitude was very low. A statistically significant increase in mean knowledge and attitude scores from baseline to post-test (p = <0.001) was seen after the intervention. Conclusion: Thus, findings conclude that educational intervention was highly effective in improving the knowledge and attitude of substance users at post-test. Large scale educational programs should be organized by policymakers regarding substance abuse to curb the problem.
