Abstract

Introduction: Cultural competency is an essential nursing skill in the 21st century as a result of the diversified global population. Specifically, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), expatriates make up 88.52% of the country’s population, suggesting a highly diversified population. The positive effect of educational program on nurses' cultural competency is well documented. However, this has not been fully explored in the UAE. This study examined the effectiveness of culturally sensitive nursing intervention (CSNI) on nurses' cultural competency in Ras Al-Khaimah. Methods: Quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted using a compromised total sample of 39 nurses in Shaam Hospital. Data were collected using a structured cultural competency (awareness, knowledge, and skills) questionnaire, with reliability coefficient (r: 0.8). Nurses were grouped in two batches for pretest data collection. Educational program was conducted for 2 days and post-test after 3 weeks. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and ANOVA at α=0.05. Result: In all, 79.5% were with BSN degree, 82.1% from diverse cultural background, majority (74.4%) have worked for up to 10 years in the UAE. However, only 53.8% had previous training in cultural care. At the pretest, 94% had poor cultural awareness. Mean score on cultural knowledge at pretest (x̄=4.53±1.466, posttest (x̄=6.08±1.826; t=0.527 p=0.00. Cultural skills (pretest): x̄=46.64±5.050, posttest: x̄=47.69±5.430; t=1.216, p=0.00. There was a statistically significant effect of selected demographic characteristics on cultural competence F (5, 33) =1.007, p>0.05. Conclusion: Nurses’ cultural competency was improved after the focused educational intervention.
