Abstract

Introduction: Respiratory tract infections constitute the greatest ‘illness burden’ in childhood, virtually affecting all age groups but especially in under five children. Due to improper discharge education children will be readmitted with other episodes of illness. So teach-back is one of the technique used to communicate discharge planning which helps care takers to understand the information being provided. Statement of the problem: A comparative study to evaluate the effectiveness of teach-back technique on improvement of discharge education among the parents of children admitted with Respiratory Tract Infections in paediatric unit of SDM Hospital, Dharwad. Objectives: • To assess the pre interventional knowledge of parents regarding respiratory tract infection, • To evaluate the effectiveness of teach-back technique by determining the difference between mean pre- and post-test knowledge scores of experimental and control group of parents regarding respiratory tract infection, • To compare knowledge scores between the experimental and control group of parents regarding respiratory tract infection, • To find an association between pre-test knowledge score with selected demographic variables. Methods: Quasi experimental-nonrandomized control group design was used. 40 parents were selected (20 in each group) by non-probability convenient sampling technique. The tool used were structured knowledge questionnaires and discharge education checklist. Data analyzed using appropriate statistical method. Results: The result revealed that, the calculated paired ‘t’ value of experimental group was ±17.5 to compare post-test knowledge scores of both group, unpaired ‘t’ test was used, and value was ±8.47, indicating that results were significant at 0.05 level. The discharge education given to experimental group by using teach-back technique showed the significant improvement as compared with control group. Interpretation and conclusion: Teach-back technique to educate the parents regarding Respiratory Tract Infections and proper discharge education showed the significant improvement in retention of the information provided to them.
