Learning Style Preferences Among Nursing Students

Abstract


Preferences of learning methods must be adopt for favorable teaching activities so, as to make learning more productive to students. Howbeit Teaching is a perpetual approach which adopts various strategies to harbor the learners’ interest. Albeit teaching profession is provocated to stipulate evidence of the effectiveness of teaching and learning methods. Therefore an exploratory study was conducted to assess the learning style preferences among nursing students. Objectives: To assess the learning style preferences of the students. To compare the learning style preferences among MSc and BSc Nursing Students. Method: A descriptive Research Design was chosen for the study. Tool used for the study was Grasha-Reichmann Student Learning Style Inventory (Standardized), consisting of 60 items. Total 110 samples (90 BSc and 20 BSc Nursing students) were selected by non-probability random sampling (Lottery Method). Statistical analysis was done by using descriptive statistical method like frequency and percentage. Results: The study findings reveals that the highest percentage is of 61.8 for collaborative learning style and the lowest percentage of 4.5 is for competitive learning style. The second choice of learning style was dependent type; following it is the participant style and independent style accounting for 16.4%, 11.2% and 5.4%, respectively. In comparison, the data figures as both the groups (MSc and BSc) preferred collaborative learning style that accounts 56.7% in BSc (N) students and 85% in MSc (N) students, whilst the least preference was the independent learning style noted as 5% for BSc and 5.5% for MSc Nursing Students. Conclusion: The study concludes Collaborative learning style as the most preferred one by the students.
