Abstract

Nursing is a concept that brings to mind a multiple ideas and images. These images include white uniforms, nursing caps, needles and bedpans, for others they include kindness, skills, compassion and intelligence [1]. In this era when nursing is no longer isolated in hospital or community settings, it is crucially important that the nursing professionals and other who would work with nurses have a clear meaning of the nursing profession [2].
Professional growth in the field of the nursing profession is not appreciable and image for the profession is not clearer and is frustrating to those joining the profession and need to continue as career [3].
The present study is an effort to assess the attitude of nursing students towards nursing education and profession. The objective of the study is to prepare the students profile and assess their attitude towards nursing education and profession. Findings revealed that majority of the nursing students were Christian, majority nursing students have their family members/relatives are nurse and majority of them were settled in India only. Most of the student shows favorable attitude towards nursing, very few stated that they faced social stigma in nursing. Nursing students have to deal with different type of patients with different perception and image of nursing, they have to face embarrassing situation.
Many factors have influenced the way nursing is perceived by the public, by professionals, and by those who are beginning their career in nursing. There is a need to improve the image of nurses in the society to attract more number of students into this noble profession. Counseling and introduction to nursing course should be introduced by all the universities, to develop positive attitudes towards nursing profession.
