Abstract

Background of the study: Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women. Approximately 1.4 million new cases are diagnosed each year. Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in most cities in India, and second most common in the rural areas. Regular monthly breast self-examination is an essential health maintenance activity. A breast exam is a self-inspection of the breasts. Breast self-examination (BSE) is a screening method used in an attempt to detect early cancer. Objectives of the study: 1) To assess the knowledge and practice of women regarding breast self-examination. 2) To determine the association between the knowledge and selected demographic variables. 3) To determine the association between the practice and selected demographic variables. Methods: The explorative descriptive survey approach was used for the study. Nonprobability convenient sampling technique was used to select 100 students. The data collection was done by using structured questionnaire on knowledge and practice. Collected data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: About 88% women had inadequate knowledge regarding breast self-examination and none of them had adequate knowledge. 95% women did not practice breast self-examination. This shows that they had a poor practice. Conclusion: The finding of the study shows that there is inadequate knowledge and practice about the breast self-examination among women and require more awareness regarding breast self-examination for the prevention and early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
