Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Noncommunicable diseases are emerging as a major health problem globally. Indian women are mostly affected by cervix cancer. The incidence rate is higher in developing countries due to the various factors like inadequate screening facilities, lack of awareness, misconceptions and stigma about this dreadful disease condition. Major factors affecting the prevalence rate are financial conditions, sexual activities, and unavailability of proper screening techniques. Aim: The study was to assess the knowledge of school teachers and teach them about cervix cancer and its vaccination. Materials and methods: A quasi-experimental study was done on 60 female school teachers who presented to different schools of Shri Goindwal Sahib. The non-probability convenient sampling technique was used to select the subjects. Self structured questionnaire consisting of 30 knowledge items were administered after informed consent. Quantitative variables were summarized as mean and standard deviation. Results and conclusion: The mean knowledge score of pre-test experimental and control group was 13.5 with SD 4.41 and 11 with SD 3.9 respectively. The mean knowledge score of pos-test experimental and control group was 21.9 with SD 6.45 and 13.6 with SD 4.29 respectively. The paired ‘t’ test value was 5.18 which is significant at 0.05 level. The educational status and source of information had a great impact on knowledge of school teachers regarding cervix cancer and its vaccination. Recommendations: A similar study can be undertaken on large sample for better generalization by adopting a comparative research design.
