Abstract

Cancer is not a single disease with a single cause. It is a group of distinct diseases with different
causes, manifestations, treatments, and prognosis. Cancerous cells are described as malignant
neoplasms. They demonstrate uncontrolled cell growth that follows no physiologic demand. A
quantitative study was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding cancer among patients who
attend the cardiology OPD in a selected hospital at Kollam. The objectives of the study were to assess
the knowledge scores of the patients who attend the cardiology OPD regarding cancer and to find out
the association of knowledge scores with selected demographic variables. 60 patients were selected
using convenience sampling technique. The tools used for the study were demographic proforma and
structured knowledge questionnaire. The data were collected for a period of one month. The results
showed that 53.3% sample have average knowledge, 46.7% have low knowledge and none of them
have good knowledge. There is significant association between knowledge score and the demographic
variables age (p=0.09), educational status (p=0.004) and occupation (p=0.012).
