A STUDY TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE REGARDING CERVICAL CANCER AMONG NURSING STUDENTS OF SELECTED COLLEGES AT MYSURU CITY

Abstract


Cervical cancer is a very common cancer in women estimated that over a million women worldwide currently have cervical cancer. Most of these women have not been diagnosed, nor do they have access to treatment that could cure them prolong their lives. The high mortality rate from cervical cancer globally could be reduced through a comprehensive approach that includes prevention, early diagnosis, effective screening and treatment programs

OBJECTIVES

1)       To assess the knowledge regarding cervical cancer among Nursing students    

2)      To find the association between level knowledge regarding cervical cancer among Nursing students with their selected personal variables.

METHODS

Study was descriptive in nature and sample size was 60 Nursing students.  Probability convenience sampling technique was used to select the samples. The data collection was done by administering structured knowledge questionnaire regarding cervical cancer among nursing students. Data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

RESULTS

The study finding revealed that the majority 35 (58%) of Nursing students had average knowledge, 21 (35%) had good knowledge and only 4 (6.7%) had poor knowledge regarding cervical cancer. The mean knowledge score regarding cervical cancer is 13.45 with the SD of ± 3.9 ranged from 5-20.

The findings also showed that, there is a significant association between level of knowledge with their selected personal variables such as age, year of studying, gender, marital status,  religion,  and previous knowledge except family history.

CONCLUSION

The following conclusion was drawn on the basis of the findings of the study. This study shows that there was average and good knowledge regarding cervical cancer among Nursing students.
