Abstract

Background: Head and neck cancer denotes to a group of biologically comparable cancers that flinch in the lip, oral cavity(mouth), nasal cavity(inside nose), paranasal sinuses, pharynx and larynx. Radiation therapy leftovers the chief method of handling for patients with head and neck cancer. The tissue devastation and functional modifications in the oral cavity principal to the expansion of oral mucositis.
Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy therapy on oral mucositis among head and neck cancer patients in selected hospital at kanyakumari District,TamilNadu.
Methods: Twenty samples who have fuifilled the criteria were selected by using convenience sampling technique. Pre test and post test level of mucositis and pain was assessed by using WHO mucositis grading scale and Simple descriptive pain rating scale respectively. The control group patients received instructions for standard oral care. The experimental group patients were instructed for standard oral care plus sucking ice cubes before and after each radiotherapy session for five minutes for the period of one month.
Result: The effectiveness of cryotherapy was compared in respect of mucositis and pain. The mucositis and pain improvement among the experimental and control groups were assessed. In respect of experimental group, the mucositis and pain were statistically significantly improved from pre to post tests (P<0.01). But in respect of control group, the mucositis were equal in pre and posts tests (P=1.00). The pain of the control group was not statistically significantly differed in pre and post tests (P>0.05).
