India alone suffers from more than one quarter of the world population facing the distractive effect of cervical cancers such as cervix and breast cancers. Early detection through screening can help in reduction of cancer effect and help in providing better treatment. However, despite availability of various screening methods for cervical cancer, women are not showing interest to participate in screening in regions where programme is available. It is predicted that the number of women in India who will die due to cervical cancer will reach to 13 million by 2120. Providing screening programs is in place a major obstacle for women across many countries and culture has been the requirement to undergo a speculum based pelvic examination, limited sources to care and lack of awareness about disease and preventive tools. In this protocol study, we provide an assessment of opinion and experiences regarding self-sampling versus assisted sampling for HPV screening and noncompliance of HPV vaccine among women at selected villages of Puducherry as a mixed methods study.
2022-12-21T11:51:26+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 International Journal of Oncological Nursinghttps://nursing.journalspub.info/index.php?journal=IJON&page=article&op=view&path%5B%5D=2235Nuclear Medicine in Diagnosing Cancer2023-02-20T08:56:28+00:00Elizabeth Pushpa Ranielizabeth.sampath@gmail.com
Recent trend in imaging technology is nuclear scan to diagnose cancer. It allows assessing the anatomic changes in the organ without disturbing the metabolic processes in tumours and surrounding tissues. Nuclear scan plays a crucial role in diagnosing malignancies. Cancer tissues absorb a higher concentration of the tracer than normal tissues. Gamma cameras capture the pattern of radioactivity of tracer circulation and accumulation in the body. Gamma cameras work by detecting gamma rays emitted by radionuclides. Bone Scan, PET Scan, PET/CT scan, Thyroid Scan, MUGA Scan, and Gallium scan are used to diagnose different types of cancer. Pregnancy, allergic reactions, and other are the three main categories under which the contraindications are divided. Nuclear medicine scans have both short- and long-term effects. Gamma cameras detect gamma rays emitted by radionuclides. Different types of cancer have been discussed using nuclear medicine imaging technology, such as PSMA-targeted PET tracers revealing accurate diagnosis, staging of primary prostate cancer, and re-staging even in the presence of low prostate specific antigen values. The management of lung cancer has shown fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) to be very helpful, and its cost-effectiveness in lung cancer staging is well established. The bone scan is crucial in oncologic imaging due to its high sensitivity for lesion detection, simplicity of whole-body imaging, and low cost. More than 90% of confirmed cases of brain and bone metastases are supported by evidence. Liver scan has exhibited accuracy closer to 80%. In the near future, nuclear medicine technology will be extensively used not only for diagnosing cancer but also for treating oncology conditions. Nursing care is critical component in the department of nuclear medicine for providing effective patient care, and better patient prognosis. Nurses have to stay updated with the recent technologies for providing expanded and extended care to the patient.
2023-02-20T08:49:23+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 International Journal of Oncological Nursinghttps://nursing.journalspub.info/index.php?journal=IJON&page=article&op=view&path%5B%5D=2293Study to Assess the Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Breast Cancer Among Adolescents in Selected Degree Colleges2023-02-20T08:56:28+00:00Sujata Japannavarsujatacj@gmail.comSujata Vijaykumarsujatacj@gmail.com
Background: Cancer is increase in the numbers and growth of immature cells in the body, these cells can arise from any part of the body, and breast cancer is the immature growth of the cells in the breast parenchyma. The incidence of breast cancer is similar in both the genders, the prognosis and management of breast cancer is fruitful when the diagnosis is done in the early stage, the knowledge of cancer of breast will bring awareness among population and help in early detection and better management. Adolescents are most vulnerable for breast cancer, the knowledge of breast cancer will help them to manage cancer in therapeutic manner, hence the present study aims to assess the knowledge and attitude of adolescents studying in degree colleges so as to plan an educational program to bring awareness to them. Methodology: A descriptive study designed to assess the knowledge of adolescents regarding breast cancer, total 124 adolescents were selected by simple random selection from selected degree colleges, A structured questionnaire assessed for content validity index and reliability was used to collect the data on knowledge and attitude. The collected data was analyzed through differential and inferential statistics for level of knowledge using SPSS version 18.0. Results: The study found that the knowledge and attitude of adolescents were poor regarding breast cancer, few of them had moderate knowledge and none of them had adequate and good knowledge and attitude regarding breast cancer. Conclusion: the present study was designed to assess the knowledge and attitude of adolescents regarding breast cancer and found that adolescents studying in selected degree colleges had poor knowledge and attitude; the study recommends that the educational program is essential and would bring the awareness and improve the knowledge and attitude of adolescents towards breast cancer.
2023-02-20T08:53:44+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 International Journal of Oncological Nursinghttps://nursing.journalspub.info/index.php?journal=IJON&page=article&op=view&path%5B%5D=2294Develop and Test a Video-assisted Training Module on PICC Insertion for Oncology Nurses in a Tertiary Level Care Hospital, New Delhi2023-02-20T08:56:28+00:00Maggie Renjithmaggiepeter2000@gmail.comG. Rachel Andrewsmaggiepeter2000@gmail.comLalit Kumarmaggiepeter2000@gmail.com
Context: Nursing education and consistent care based on the uniform guidelines has an impact on PICC related outcomes. It is imperative to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice among nurses with regard to PICC as it is considered as an advanced nursing practice. Aim: To develop and test a video-assisted training module on Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter insertion (PICCTM) for oncology nurses. Settings and Design: The study was conducted in the Institute of Rotary Cancer Hospital in a tertiary level care centre, using a methodological, pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test time series design. Methods and Material: The PICCTM has been developed through an eight-stage iterative process and was administered to a group of 30 oncology nurses, who were enrolled using purposive sampling technique. Tools used were validated; self-developed subject data sheet, knowledge questionnaire, observation checklists and opinionnaire to assess the impact of PICCTM on nurses' knowledge, skill, and acceptability of PICCTM. Pre-test and first post-test was done on Day-1, followed by second post-test on Day-30. Ethical clearance was obtained. Statistical Analysis: STATA 14 was the software used to calculate descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: PICCTM was found effective in improving knowledge and skill of oncology nurses in PICC insertion. There was significant improvement in total and domain wise (cognitive and psychomotor domains) knowledge scores of oncology nurses 30 days after PICCTM (P=0.0001, P=0.0001, P=0.0001), which was independent of their socio-demographic variables. 70% of the participants in post-test-I and 90% in post-test-II have achieved good skill in PICC insertion on a mannequin. All the nurses (n=30) reported PICCTM as highly acceptable and useful. Conclusion: PICCTM had an impact on knowledge and skill of nurses regarding PICC insertion. Hence competency in PICC care and insertion can be obtained by PICCTM.
2023-02-20T08:55:03+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 International Journal of Oncological Nursinghttps://nursing.journalspub.info/index.php?journal=IJON&page=article&op=view&path%5B%5D=2295Knowledge Towards Cervical Cancer Among Reproductive Age Group Women at Rural Areas of Belagavi District: A Cross-sectional Study2023-02-20T08:56:28+00:00Julie Jadhavjulierjadhav@gmail.comThe second most frequently diagnosed disease and the third most prevalent cause of cancer death in women globally is cervical cancer. Developing nations account for 85% of all cervical cancer-related fatalities and about 83% of all new cases worldwide. Human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection that can be avoided by practicing safe sexual behaviour and taking immunizations, among other things, is the main culprit. The study's objective was to evaluate reproductive-age women's awareness about cervical cancer and its prevention in rural areas. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive research based in a community was conducted. An interviewer handed a questionnaire to collect the data. Several stages of sampling were used to choose the study participants. Using the SPSS version 20 software, descriptive statistics including frequency, mean, and percentage were calculated. Result: In this study, the result revealed that 50% women had poor knowledge score regarding cervical cancer and 30% women had average knowledge score regarding cervical cancer and 20% had good knowledge scoreregarding cervical cancer. Conclusion: Women did not have enough general understanding about cervical cancer. However, those who had heard about it had a rather upbeat outlook. The mass media served as the primary information source. However, no public health issue can be resolved on its own.
