A Descriptive Study to Assess Risk Factors and Prevalence of Osteoporosis among Women in View to Prepare a Pamphlet on Preventive Measures in a Selected Hospital, Punjab

Abstract


A descriptive study was conducted in a selected hospital of Patiala, Punjab to assess the risk factors and prevalence of osteoporosis among women in OPD. The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and risk factors among women in the OPD with the selected variables such as age, monthly income, education, occupation and residence, family history and dietary habits. The areas selected for the study were the medicine OPD, orthopedic, endocrine OPD and neurology OPD. A descriptive approach was adopted in the study using purposive sampling technique. 50 women from medicine and neurology and endocrine OPD were selected. The data was collected by using multiple choice questions and checklist. Conceptual model of the study was based on the modified Iceberg disease model. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data. According to the prevalence of osteoporosis, 10% of women were having positive signs of osteoporosis and 90% of women were having negative signs and symptoms of osteoporosis according to the risk factors. Women of 41 to 50 years of age 48% are having risk of this disease and those are having 0 to 1 children are having the 44% risk.
