Knowledge and Practice of Staff Nurses on Emergency Management of Spinal Cord Injury with a View to Develop and Evaluate the Effectiveness of the Planned Teaching Programme on Emergency Management of Spinal Cord Injury Based on the Identified Learning Needs

Abstract


Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a devastating injury with serious consequences to the individual and his
family both physically, mentally, and socially. The objectives of the study were: To identify the learning
needs of staff nurses regarding emergency management of spinal cord injury, to develop a planned
teaching program based on learning needs, to evaluate the effectiveness of a planned teaching program
on emergency management of spinal cord injuries and to find association between the mean pre-test
knowledge and practice scores with demographical variables and to find correlation between
knowledge and practice of staff nurses related to emergency management of SCI. The research
approach selected for the study was quantitative one group pre-test and post-test design. Sample of 60
staff nurses were selected working in Emergency and ICU department of a selected hospital, New Delhi
by convenient sampling technique and the tools used were a structured knowledge questionnaire and a
checklist. The results of phase I of the study revealed inadequate knowledge and practice among staff
nurses regarding emergency management of spinal cord injury. In phase II, a planned teaching
programme on emergency management of spinal cord injury was developed based on the learning needs
and administered to the group. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential
statistics. The results revealed that the planned teaching programme on emergency management of
spinal cord injury was effective. The mean post-test knowledge level (51.5) was higher than the mean
pre-test knowledge level (41.5) with a mean difference 10 and the mean post-test practice level (10.3)
was higher the mean pre-test practice level (7.6)
with a mean difference 2.7. There was no
correlation found between the knowledge and
practice level of staff nurses. There was no
significant association between the pre-test

knowledge and practice level with the socio-
demographic variables There was a significant

association found between the mean pre-test
knowledge level and in-service education
(workshop/CNE) on spinal cord injury. It was
concluded that the planned teaching programme
was effective in enhancing the knowledge and
practice of the staff nurses working in Emergency
and ICU Department.
