A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Self-instructional Module on Knowledge Regarding “Lower Extremity Functional Scales for Fracture Patients among Staff Nurses in Selected Hospitals, Bangalore”
Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: The lower extremity functional scale (LEFS) is a valid patient-rated
outcome measure for the measurement of lower extremity function. Hence the investigator felt the
need to assess the effectiveness of self-instructional module on knowledge regarding lower extremity
functional scales for fracture patients among staff nurses in selected hospitals, Bengaluru. Through
this study investigator also focused on imparting knowledge regarding lower extremity functional
scales for fracture patients among staff nurses and to aid staff nurses in preventing and identifying
complication types of fractures and fasten the recovery of lower extremity fracture patients. The study
aims to assess the pre-test knowledge level regarding the post-lower extremity functional scales for
fracture patients’ complications among staff nurses in selected hospitals, Bengaluru, to assess the
effectiveness of self-instructional module on knowledge regarding the lower extremity functional
scales for fracture patients. To find out the association between post-test knowledge level regarding
lower extremity functional scales for fracture patients among with selected demographic variables
among staff nurses in selected hospitals, Bengaluru. Methodology: Evaluative research approach was
selected; one group pre-test and post-test design was adopted. Sample size was 60 and sample was
staff nurses in selected hospitals, Bengaluru. Samples were selected by purposive sampling
techniques. Structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. Data
was analyzed by both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The pre-test mean knowledge
score was 12.55 and the post-test mean knowledge score was 22.33. The paired ‘t’ test value between
pre-test and post-test was 20.60 which is statistically significant at 0.05 level degree of freedom. The
study reveals that there is a significant association between the knowledge level and certain
demographic variables. Conclusion: The study reveals the pre-test knowledge level was deficient. The
study result showed that there is an increase in knowledge level after administration of SIM regarding
LEFS. Hence there was a need to conduct self-instructional module on LEFS among staff nurses.
