A study to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on prevention and management of osteoporosis among the post menopausal women in a selected setting

Abstract


Women play multiple roles in their daily life. The structure and function of women are complex. Bones give basic strength and structure to the body. Bone formation occurs in the early ages of life. As we grow, it reaches the peak. Gradually, bone demineralization occurs as a part of aging process. Menopause is a risk factor for bone demineralization and increases the prevalence of osteoporosis in women than men. Osteoporosis is eight times more in women than men. Since it does not show any symptoms during early stages, it is often noticed in the late stage when fracture occurs. Hence, the present study was aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on prevention and management of osteoporosis among the post-menopausal women at Nanniyode Village, Perumatty Panchayat, Palakkad, Kerala. The research design adopted in the study was pre-experimental research design. Thirty women between the age group of 45 and 65 were selected as samples by adopting the purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by using a structured questionnaire. Education on prevention and management of osteoporosis was given by using flash cards. Knowledge of women on prevention and management of osteoporosis before and after the intervention was assessed. The findings revealed that the intervention was effective in promoting the knowledge of women on osteoporosis. It was also observed that that there is an association between knowledge and education and occupation. Hence it can be concluded that women are in need of health education to prevent osteoporosis.
