Abstract

A study was carried out to assess the effect of structured teaching programme regarding home care management among mothers of children undergoing cardiac surgeries. Pre-experimental design was adopted for the study. Using purposive sampling technique, 44 children undergoing intracardiac repair were selected. A structured interview schedule was used to collect data from the mothers of the hospitalized children. Initially, a pre-test was done, and on the same day, structured teaching programme was administered to the mothers on all aspects of home care management of children undergoing intracardiac repair. Post-test was done 3 days after the structured teaching programme using the same tool. Paired t-test was used to test the effect of intervention. The findings revealed that the mean scores before and after administration of structured teaching programme were 8.56 and 19.68, respectively, with a standard deviation of 37.10 and 3.1, respectively. The mean difference was 11.12. The calculated t-value was 14.87, which was greater than the table value at 0.05 level of significance. This shows that the intervention has increased the level of knowledge of mothers regarding home care management of children undergoing intracardiac repair. Chi-square was done to find out the association between the level of knowledge of mothers and demographic variables. The findings showed a significant association between the educational qualification of mothers and their level of knowledge on home care management of children undergoing intracardiac repair.
