Breastfeeding in Infants: A Critical Overview

Abstract


Breast feeding is one of the gifts for mother to feed her baby which is ideal food and there is no substitute for breast milk. Breast feeding is to meet the nutritional needs of infant and child. Breast milk is natural readymade food which is most suitable for neonates because of its nutritional value, protection from the infection and provides warmth. After birth of baby till six months of age only mother’s mill is given. The mother’s breast begins to prepare for lactation with the onset of puberty. As a woman matures there is further mammary gland development giving a characteristic structure to the breast. During pregnancy, the glandular cells of breast change into actual secreting cells. There two reflexes prolactin and oxytocin which helps to in production and maintenance of breast milk to feed the baby. Preparation of mother for breast feeding is very important like hygiene, diet clothing and confidence to feed her baby so that successful breast feeding can be initiated. Different positions of breast feeding such as cradle hold, foot ball hold and side lying positions can be taught to the mother. Position of mother and baby during breast feeding is very important so that attachment (LATCH)  can be established. Breast feeding has its own advantages for baby as well as child.
