Assess the knowledge regarding complementary feeding among mothers of children (6months-2 years) in selected area of Shimla, with a view to develop informational booklet on Complementary feeding

Abstract


Background: Breastfeeding saves lives and it is the best source of nutrition for infants.
Breastfeeding is the most cost- effective investment in a country. Complementary feeding is the
transition from exclusive breast feeding to family foods. Complementary feeding is started from
the 6 to 18-24 months of age and this is the most sensitive period for a infant. This is the time
when infants are suffered from malnutrition & contributing the high incidence of malnutrition
among under five children in world wide. WHO 2018 global nutritional report reveals that the
burden of malnutrition is excessively high and every country in the world is affected. The infants
should start receiving complementary feeding along with breast milk from 6 months onwards.

Method and tool: The design of the study was non experimental descriptive design, conducted
among 100 mothers of children age between 6 months-2 years. It was based on Modified
Imogene M. Kings goal attainment theory (1981). The tools used were structured knowledge
questionnaire.
Results: The finding revealed that 13% had good knowledge, 80% mothers had adequate
knowledge, and 7% had poor knowledge regarding complementary feeding. Significant
association was found between knowledge score and the monthly income of the mothers.
Conclusion: The findings revealed that knowledge regarding complementary feeding among
mothers was average. Hence, it indicates the importance of frequent awareness programmes and
educational interventions to enhance and update the knowledge and improve the practices of
mothers regarding complementary feeding.
