PERCEPTION OF PARENTING BEHAVIOR AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN AT SELECTED SCOOL IN COIMBATORE

Abstract


: This study assessed the perception of parenting behavior among school children at a selected school in Coimbatore.

Methods: Descriptive design was adopted. The study participants were 75 school children. Modified Perceptions of Parenting Scale-Child Version(POPS)was used to collect data.

Results: Findings revealed that,70(93.33%) children perceived their mother’s parenting behavior to be positive and 68(90.67%) perceived their father’s parenting behavior to be positive. Findings on the association between school children’s perception of mother’s parenting behavior and demographic variables showed that, there was a significant association between children’s perception of mother’s parenting behavior and mother’s occupation, religion and the general relationship of school children with their mothers. Association between the children’s perception of father’s parenting behavior showed no significant association with any of the demographic variables.

Conclusion: Perceptions of parenting behavior influences children to a great extent. Hence parents need to be conscious in child rearing as it creates an impact on children
