A Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Jaundice and Its Prevention in Neonates Among Antenatal Mothers in Selected Areas Mudh, Jalandhar (Punjab)

Abstract


Background: To determine the level of prenatal mothers’ awareness of neonatal jaundice and methods for preventing it, a study was undertaken in the selected area of Mudh, Punjab, to prepare an information guide sheet was undertaken by Muskan Bhatti, Jashanpreet Kaur, Majid Mehmood, Harman Kaur, Atul Kumar Verma, Anamika, Anju Devi, Anju, Geeta as a prerequisite of the requirement for the Diploma of GNM at Bharat Institute of Nursing and Training, Punjab Nurses Registration Council, Mohali during the year 2022. Objectives: (1) To assess the knowledge score regarding jaundice and its prevention in newborns among antenatal mothers in the selected area, mudh, Jalandhar. (2) To determine the association of knowledge regarding jaundice and its prevention in newborns among antenatal mothers with selected demographic variables. Methodology: A descriptive survey approach was used for assessing the knowledge regarding jaundice and its prevention in newborns among antenatal mothers in selected community areas in Mudh, Jalandhar. The study was conducted in the community area of Mudh with the samples of 60 antenatal mothers selected by convenient sampling technique. The collected data were examined and evaluated in light of the study's aims and hypotheses. Results: Seven (11.67%) antenatal mothers are between the age group 20–22, 12 (20%) are in the age group of 22–24, 41 (68.33%) are in age group of ≤ 25 years. 10 (16.67%) antenatal mothers belong to Hindu religion, 8 (13.33%)belong to Muslim, 37 (61.67%) belong to Sikh, 5 (8.33%) belongs to Christian. 17 (28.33%) antenatal mothers are illiterate, 26 (43.33%) are 10th pass, 13 (21.67%) are 12th pass, 4 (6.67%) are graduate. 28 (48.67%) antenatal mothers have nuclear family, 32 (53.33%) have joint family. 10 (16.67%) husband of antenatal mothers are illiterate, 28 (46.67%) are 10th pass, 20 (33.33%) are 12th pass, 2 (3.33) are graduate. 6 (10%) husband of antenatal mothers are Government Employee, 21 (35%) have Private Job, 18 (30%) are Farmers, 15 (25%) are Laborers. 7 (11.66%) income of antenatal mother’s husband are 5000–10,000, 25 (41.67%) income 10,000–15,000, 22 (36.67%) income 15,000–20,000, 6 (10%) income ≤ 20,000. 4 (6.67%) antenatal mothers have Traditional Media, 21 (35%) Print Media, 20 (33.33%) Electronic Media, 15 (25%) mass media. It was revealed that among 60 antenatal mothers 1.67% had poor knowledge, 53.33% were having satisfactory knowledge, 45% were having good knowledge and none of them were having excellent knowledge. It was revealed that among 60 antenatal mothers 20% were having satisfactory knowledge about prevention, 58.33% were having good knowledge about prevention, and 21.67% were having excellent knowledge about prevention regarding neonatal jaundice
