A. Arul Mathi

Abstract

The children of today are the citizens of tomorrow. One of the major factors affecting children's health and welfare is adequate nutrition. Malnutrition is a major global public health issue, especially for young children who are more susceptible to its effects. In India, malnutrition affects every other child, and it affects every third child worldwide. The majority of these children reside in rural, tribal, and urban slum areas. At this age, physical activity increases considerably and a higher intake of nutrients is needed, particularly energy producing protein and calorie prevents mild to moderate malnutrition. The study focused on the following objectives: (1) To assess the knowledge level on preparation of Hyderabad Mix among mothers of under-five children in Fuljhore rural area. (2) To evaluate the effectiveness of demonstration program on Hyderabad Mix preparation among the mothers with under-five children. (3) To determine the relationship between the pre-test knowledge score and their chosen demographic factors, such as the child's age, the mother's age, the parents' occupation status, the types of families, the dietary habits, the socioeconomic status, etc. One group pre-test post-test was the research design selected for the investigation. Moreover, a quantitative research approach was used. The Fuljhore rural region in Durgapur served as the study's location. With the technology that the investigators created, the data was gathered. The sample size consisted of 60 mothers of children under the age of five. Based on the study's goals, the collected data was analyzed and evaluated. Using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, the acquired data was compiled and tallied (percentage, mean and standard deviations). Findings revealed significant statistical difference between mean, pre-test and mean post-test knowledge score in experimental group after the structured teaching and demonstration program regarding Hyderabad Mix, as evidenced by pre-test mean score which was 6.58 and post-test mean score of 16.01. It indicates that the information content was effective in increasing knowledge of under-five children’s mothers regarding Hyderabad Mix.
