Abstract

Background and Objectives: Previously stated positive effect of music therapy on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) laid the hypothesis of this study that children with ASD may perform better in musical task when given proper training when compared to the normal controls. Subjects and Methods: The present study consisted of 30 participants: 15 children with ASD and 15 age-matched typically developing children. All the participants were instructed to identify music instrument (source of music) correctly out of the six given choices of music instruments. There were a total of 30 trials for each participant. Percentage correct scores were calculated for pre- and post-training conditions. Result and Discussion: Results showed a significant improvement in the performance in both the groups. The effect of music training was greater in children with ASD when compared to typically developing children. Conclusion: These results highlight better capacities within children with ASD to learn any musical skill.
