Assess the Menstural Irregularities Among Adolescents

Abstract


Background: Menstruation is an important part of female reproductive cycle but menstrual irregularities in adolescent girls may affect the normal life of adolescents and young adult women. The studies reported high proportion of adolescents suffering from menstrual irregularities. Objective of the Study: The study was aimed to assess the menstrual irregularities among adolescent girls and to find association between the menstrual irregularities and sample characteristics. Methodology: The research design used in the study was a descriptive survey design. Samples were selected from Mararikkulam South Panchayat, Alappuzha. Thirty adolescent girls were selected by the convenience sampling technique. A structured questionnaire and a check list were used to assess the sample characteristics and menstrual irregularities. Results: The results revealed that 60% had menstrual irregularities and 40% had regular menstruation. In that, 46.7% had dysmenorrhea, 13.3% had polymenorrhea, 20.0% had oligomenorrhea, and 3.33% had hypomenorrhea and menorrhagia. None of them had amenorrhea and metrorrhagia. And the menstrual irregularities had significant association with religion, food habits, age at menarche, exercise pattern, and dietary pattern at 0.05 level of significance.
