Obstetric Triage Scales

Beutlin Robert, KV. Shiji Mol

Abstract

Triage is the process of prioritizing patients to provide necessary treatments in the shortest possible time. Obstetric triage is to evaluate mother and fetus for determining the care. Triaging in obstetrics is more specialized than general and trauma triage, because this involves assessing labor condition of the mother, fetal well-being, and preparing investigations and interventions for obstetric problems. Several obstetric triage acuity tools have been developed to classify patients. Obstetric Triage Acuity Scale), Maternal Fetal Triage Index and Florida Hospital Obstetric Triage Acuity Scale uses five-level system, and can increase the proportion of high-acuity patients seen in an urgent fashion, whereas Swiss Emergency Triage Scale and Birmingham Symptom-Specific Obstetric Triage System uses four-level triage scale to measure the acuity.
