A Randomized control trial: ‘‘Effect on application of transillumination device during peripheral IV Line cannulation on selected parameters among hospitalized under five children in navimumbai

Manisha Nandkumar, Bharti Gurav

Abstract

Transillumination is defined as passing of a light through the walls of a body part or organs to facilitate medical inspection 30. In transillumination, the hemoglobin within the vessel absorbs the light while the surrounding tissue scatters it thereby providing a suitable contrast between the vein and surrounding subcutaneous tissue. Veins can be identified between the fibre-optic arms as dark lines in the pinker subcutaneous tissue. Surface veins appear darker and more defined than the diffuse lines of deep veins.31-32 Transillumination for the localization of veins for cannulation is simple, cheap, and safe and can be used in every procedure room in the hospital.42 The introduction of this simple technology may improve the workflow in pediatric hospitals, if minimize the time, number of trials, and wealth can be saved when total cost of the cannula insertion is decreased. Objectives: To assess the effect of application of transillumination device during peripheral IV-line cannulation on selected parameters among hospitalized under five children in experimental group and standard care in control group. To compare the selected parameters among hospitalized under five children in experimental and control group. To find out association between selected parameters and selected demographic variables among hospitalized under five children in experimental and control group. Research methodology: The research approach was evaluative, and the research design was true experimental posttest only design. Samples for final study consisted of 180 hospitalized under five children with difficult venous access. 90 in experimental group and 90 in control group. Randomization technique was used for selection and allocation of samples who met the inclusion
