Effect of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Perinatal Bereavement Care Among Staff Nurses in Neonatal Units of Hospitals

Abstract


Introduction: A multifaceted phenomenon that is of concern to nurses and researchers is called perinatal bereavement which follows perinatal loss. Perinatal loss is defined as loss of an infant through death via unintended or involuntary loss of pregnancy by miscarriage, early loss (less than 20 weeks), stillbirth (>20 weeks gestation), or neonatal loss (newborn through 28 days of life). Communication skill is crucial for the neonatal nurses if parents need to be empowered. Objectives: (1) To assess the effect of pre- and post-test knowledge and attitude scores of staff nurses on perinatal bereavement care before and after structured teaching program; (2) To compare pre and post-test knowledge and attitude of nurses on perinatal bereavement care. Methods:The research design of the study is quasi experimental design. Sample consisted of 60 staff nurses working in neonatal units of selected hospitals during the period of study. The tool for structured teaching program on perinatal bereavement care was under following headings: definition and meaning, causes, effects, general concept, and nursing care of perinatal bereavement care. To ensure the content validity, obtained from 15 experts and reliability of tool was r=0.7540. The data gathering process begins on 4th January 2016 to 16th January 2016. Permission from institutional ethics committee was obtained. The structured teaching program conducted on knowledge and attitude regarding perinatal bereavement care was conducted with pre- and post-test was conducted on the 7th day. This process continued until the investigator obtained the required sample size. Results: The overall pre-test knowledge score in definition and meaning of perinatal bereavement care was 44.4% and post-test score was 100%. Pre-test knowledge score of causes of perinatal bereavement care was 45.8% and post-test score was 85.8%. Overall score of pre-test knowledge regarding effects of perinatal bereavement care was 36.3% and post-test score was 80.8%. Total score of pre-test knowledge regarding sign and symptoms of perinatal bereavement care was 28.3% and post-test score was 85 the overall mean score of knowledge regarding perinatal bereavement care in pre-test was 48.27% and in post-test it was 83.9%. The overall mean score of favorable attitudes in pre-test was 50.9% and in post-test was 81.9%. Conclusion: Structured teaching program on knowledge and attitude regarding perinatal bereavement care is important aspect of nursing education.
