Abstract

Introduction: The present research work investigated the comparative study of breastfeeding technique among postnatal mothers who underwent normal vaginal delivery and caesarean delivery in selected hospital at Wayanad. The objectives of the study were: to assess the breastfeeding techniques among postnatal mothers who underwent caesarean section; to assess the breastfeeding techniques among postnatal mothers who underwent normal vaginal delivery; to compare the breastfeeding techniques among mothers who underwent caesarean section and normal vaginal deliveries; and to find the association between breastfeeding technique among post-natal mothers who underwent caesarean section and normal vaginal delivery and selected demographic variables. Material and Method: The method of the study was comparative descriptive design. A total of 50 mothers, among which 25 mothers underwent caesarean section and 25 mothers underwent normal vaginal deliveries, admitted in Dr Moopen’s hospital, were selected by using convenient sampling technique. The breastfeeding technique was assessed using LATCH breastfeeding assessment score tool. Result: On comparison between breastfeeding techniques among postnatal mothers who underwent vaginal delivery and caesarean delivery, the mothers who underwent vaginal delivery showed good LATCH score than mothers who underwent caesarean delivery; the p-value is less than 0.05 (<0.001), which is statistically significant. On analysis of the association between the demographic variables and breastfeeding techniques shows that there is an association between mothers who underwent normal vaginal delivery and caesarean section with the breastfeeding techniques since 78.3% mothers who belong to normal vaginal delivery have good latching and the p-value is <0.001. There is an association between the age group of mothers who underwent normal vaginal delivery and caesarean section with the breastfeeding techniques since 65.2% mothers who belong to 26–30 years of age have good latching and the p-value is 0.041 (<0.05). There is also a statistically significant association between the breastfeeding techniques and religion since 43.5% participants who belong to Muslim religion have good latching and p-value is 0.026 (<0.05). Discussion: This study reconfirmed that mothers who underwent vaginal delivery show good breastfeeding technique than mothers who underwent caesarean delivery.
