Abstract

Background: The clinics' managers and experienced nurses have access to resources that would help them in their work. Their work involves skills including changing drugs, starting therapy, and conducting diagnostic tests in accordance with procedures for more than 80% of the time. Though the nurse midwives are legally permitted to conduct deliveries, there are no nurse led birth clinics established. There may be numerous factors involved. Most important is the perception of public on outcome of nurse led care; in India, the concept or nurse led clinic is at intent stage where the nurse midwives are competent and skilful in nature. Thus, the present study is undertaken to identify the barriers for implementation of Nurse led Birth Clinic in selected community health centre of Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra. Material and Method: A descriptive study was used. The participants were selected by simple random sampling technique, and self-prepared and content validated structured questionnaire (identify the barriers for implementation of NLBC) was used for data collection. If necessary, descriptive statistics (mean, SD) were used. Results: The overall barriers’ score for implementation of NLBC for nurses was 64.27 ± 8.66. 10% nurses find moderate barriers for implementation of NLBC, and the score was 42.7 ± 4.39 and 90% nurses find substantial barriers for implementation of NLBC, and the score was 66.6 ± 4.84. As per the aspects wise, the barriers for implementation score regarding General knowledge was 7.89 ± 1.30; regarding Education and Teaching, score was 11.94 ± 2.65; finance and resources score was 12.42 ± 1.50; regarding legal aspects, score was 11.63 ± 2.34; about social status, score was 9.06 ± 2.39; and availability and accessibility score was 9.06 ± 2.39. Conclusion: The study findings showed that for implementation of Nurse lead birth clinic, very few nurses find moderate barriers in some aspects and highest number of nurses find substantial barriers for implementation of NLBC. It means that for implementation of NLBC, the nurses feel that it is a difficult task and they may face more barriers.
